Tanner Carter, 16, testified that he and Chism visited a skate park in Nashville before he moved. The situation got so bad, Carter said, that she warned Chism he would not be permitted to visit their home unless he changed his ways. “Tanner always referred to Philip as his brother.”Ĭarter testified that Chism was respectful and well behaved with her family, but treated his mother poorly and sometimes cursed at her. “They clicked immediately and were super close,” she said. The boys met at preschool when they were 2 years old, said Carter’s mother, Sabrina. Philip Chism often stayed with Carter and his family. “She was the mom, the dad, the person who just made it happen,” Rodriguez said. Philip Chism got his own room at their new home while Diana Chism shared a bedroom with her two daughters, she said. At times, the household was chaotic, but Diana Chism tried to provide for everyone, she said. When the family moved out of Rodriguez’s home, she said Diana Chism struggled and did not receive financial support from the children’s father, Stacy. Diana Chism’s marriage was on the rocks because of her husband’s infidelity and Philip spent as many as three to four days a week at the home of his best friend, Tanner Carter, she said. The family moved in with a friend, Claudia Rodriguez, who testified that they spent six months living in a spare room in her house in 2010. Another daughter also suffered from mental illness and “couldn’t handle anything,” Barbieri said.Ĭhism lived near his grandfather in Florida for about a year when he was 9 or 10 years old before moving back to Clarksville, Tenn., with his mother and two sisters, according to court testimony. The youngest of their three children is Philip Chism’s mother, Diana. The couple divorced and Joyce has since died, Barbieri said. Her illness came on quickly and persisted when the family moved to Brazil and then returned to the United States, he said.
